- ἔπαινος, ου, ὁ (s. prec. entry; Simonides, Pind., Hdt.+).① the act of expressing admiration or approval, praise, approval, recognitionⓐ toward humans (freq. in honorific ins)α. from humans ἔκ τινος 1 Cl 30:6; Ro 2:29; 13:3. εἰς ἔπαινόν τινος to give recognition to someone 1 Pt 2:14 (WvanUnnik, NTS 2, ’55, 198–202, w. ref. to Diod S 15, 1, 1). ὁ ἀδελφός, οὗ ὁ ἔ. ἐν τ. εὐαγγελίῳ διὰ πασῶν τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν the brother whose fame in connection with the gospel has gone through all the churches 2 Cor 8:18.β. from God (cp.
